Tent Design
How big are your tents?
Our tents range from 131 Sq. Feet (12.25 Sq. M) to 10,000 Sq. Feet (929 Sq. M) and more. Custom designs can be as large as you would like.
How much do your tents cost per square foot / square meter?
Some tents cost more than others per square foot/meter so we are not able to calculate prices in this way. Each tent price is calculated differently and based on the structure, labor and complexity to manufacture. Custom options such as insulation, openings and frames used can also affect the price. Prices exclude freight, wooden platforms, layout, electrical, plumbing, interiors, fixtures, appliances, setup, duties and related costs.
Do you make custom tents?
Yes. Contact us with your ideas, plans or drawings.
Can standard designs be customized?
Yes, on standard tent designs, you can choose the color of the canvas, rain fly and shade fly, frame colors along with window and door placement and type. When we enter the design phase of the project, you will be sent over our complete color list for all of our materials. Do you like a specific design but wish there was a covered veranda? We can add that on to any design you like.
Do your tents have a ground sheet?
No, our tents do not come with a ground sheet.
Do your tents require a deck for them to be built on?
Yes, wooden decking is most popular but floating decks and poured concrete slabs have all been frequently used. The tents must be secured to a solid base.
Minimum deck/platform size should be extended out 1m/3ft from all sides of the tent. This allows for enough room to set up the tent as well as for tent maintenance in the future. Be sure to allow enough crawl space underneath the deck to run and maintain utilities.
Do you supply decking?
No. Depending on your region, we can put you in touch with one of our partners who can supply all components of decking from the substructure to the planks. They also supply tongue and groove inner flooring along with a moisture barrier that is installed between the decking and the inner floor of the tent.
Can you design decks?
Yes. We have absolute talent and understanding of how critical a deck is when it comes to achieving your vision.
Can your tents be disassembled easily?
Yes, this is one of the important features of the hanging body style tent. They can be taken down relatively easily in the case of impending severe weather such as Cyclones, Hurricanes, etc. The installation of framed doors and windows into the tents will impede this feature.
What is the difference between your tents and Yurts?
Our tents are very different in many ways from yurts. The points below show some of our tent features and represent some of the differences between our tents and yurts.
· 3 roof layers for natural cooling in warm conditions and added protection of the tent.
· The tents are easy and quick to assemble and to break down (unless wooden doors/windows are installed).
· The tents consist of individual components that can be replaced as need be, that the tents never need to be replaced in their entirety.
· Fabric is a heavy ripstop canvas and treated with UV protection, fire retardant, anti rot and waterproofing. Our canvas is not your typical cotton canvas.
· Tent comes with inner liner and curtain option
· The tents can be insulated.
· Our designs are majestic, elegant and aesthetically pleasing.
· We also supply a canvas maintenance compound that further extends the life of the canvas, that when applied, restores UV protection, fire retardant, anti rot, water proofing & original color.
· Better use of space.
· We can customize window and door openings to meet the customer requirements.
A yurt is a circular domed “tent” of skins or felt stretched over a collapsible lattice framework.
Can the tents be ground mounted?
No. The tents must be set up on a wooden platform or concrete base.
The Ordering Process
What is the ordering process for the tents?
Initial invoice will be provided to you, which will include the freight method and estimate.
Design Phase: Make any custom changes to the first drawing provided to you, indicate door and window placements. You will be sent a revised drawing reflecting the changes for you to sign off on with your approval. The drawing will then be converted to a CAD file.
Shipping instructions for must be filled out. Please note that you may change/update these instructions at any time prior to the dispatch of tents from the factory.
Sales contract to be signed.
Manufacturing begins after the signed drawing, sales contract, shipping instructions and down payment have been received.
One to two weeks before the manufacturing is complete, we will provide you with a current freight quote. You will be issued a balance of payment invoice.
After balance of payment has been received we will provide you with an estimated departure date for the shipment.
Payment Terms: 75% down payment upon placement of order. The remaining 25% plus shipping, is to be paid prior to dispatch of the order. We only accept direct wire transfers and all sales are final. We do not accept credit cards, LC’s or bank certified checks.
FYI: Freight estimates are generally valid for 30 days and the manufacturing lead time is approximately 8-10 weeks, which is the reason for the freight only being an estimate. If you prefer to secure the freight estimate into an actual quote and booking, you are more than welcome to pay the freight at the same time as the down payment.
How much do your tents cost?
Each tent is priced differently. Select which tent/s you are interested in and then make an inquiry. The inquiry forms can be found on each tent page. Please include as much detail as possible regarding your project as well as any questions you cannot find in this FAQ. Circumstances allowing, we should be able to respond to you later that day or early on the next day.
How much does shipping cost?
You will be provided with a freight quote estimate to a destination port once we have determined what tent design(s) and quantity(s) are required. Please keep in mind that brokerage, import duties, taxes, and other costs related to shipping/import at the destination country port, are not included in the freight quote estimate that we send you. Also, some countries require specific documents for clearing purposes that are not considered “standard.” So it’s always good to confirm with your local shipping agent or specialist exactly what documents they need prior to the shipment arrival. Shipping quotes are valid for only 30 days and we handle all freight logistics to destination ocean port or airport.
From where do the tents ship? Where are they made?
Our tents are made and shipped directly from our factory in South Africa to any destination port worldwide. We handle all freight logistics to the destination port, where the customer or their agent takes over. Durban is the dispatch port for ocean freight and JNB is the dispatch port for air freight. Please note we have worked with a customs clearing agent company that has extensive knowledge in handling the majority of our USA clientele. This company bills the client directly and there is absolutely zero commissions received by us for recommending their services.
Once I place my order, how long will it be until it arrives?
Keep in mind that most of our orders (depending on the model and quantity) takes about 8 -10 weeks to manufacture. Shipping times may vary depending on the port of destination. On average, it takes between 30 and 45 days to ship your order via ocean freight. We also offer airfreight, which is significantly faster on average 5-7 days but is a more expensive option.
Will you conduct site inspections?
Yes. Please inquire for more information.
What happens if a change is requested after the order has gone into production?
We will do our best to accommodate any change requests depending on the stage in the manufacturing process. Please note changes may incur additional fees and may delay the manufacturing lead time greatly due to modifying CAD drawings as well as placement in the production line.
Setting up the tents
How long does it take to setup the tents?
After the deck/platform has been completely prepared to receive the tent the countdown begins. Each tent design is unique therefore setup times vary. The Mudanda Tent and the Kambaku Tent are among the popular designs so we have listed these as examples.
STANDARD DESIGNS
Mudanda 36.4 m² / 391.8 ft²
Zero experience setting up this tent: +/-4 days
Experienced setting up this tent: +/-2 days
Kambaku 48.1 m² / 517.7 ft²
Zero experience setting up this tent: +/-5 days
Experienced setting up this tent: +/-3 days
Do you come and setup the tent once it arrives?
Supervised Set Up Cost Considerations:
*Set up time depends on the tent design(s), quantity of tents to be set up and the skill of the labor.
*Minimum number of workers and set up supervisors will be determined thereafter.
*Number of supervisors and number of skilled/semi skilled labors directly impact the total set up time frame.
*Quantity of tents and tent designs requiring supervision. -The client has the choice of supervised tent set up for one of each tent design or the entire tent project. If Exclusive Tents supervises the set up of one tent per design, the laborers will need to learn the concept to carry on with the set up of the tents without our immediate supervision.
*Exclusive Tents Supervisors are located in Arizona (USA), Belize and South Africa.
*Any delays on the job site due to lack of preparedness may cause delay in set up resulting in additional daily rate charges, airline ticket changes, extended hotel stays, etc. that is the burden of the client.
*A tool list will be supplied prior to tent set up that the client must have on site at the time of arrival. i.e. drills (power source or extra batteries), scaffolding, ladders, etc.
*The client is responsible for round trip airfare, visas (if required), covid related costs, transport to/from airport/hotel/job site, 3 meals per day per person, accommodation and internet service.
*Working hours can range from 8-10 hours per day
Handling the elements
How do you cool the tent down in the summer?
Our tent roofing is also designed to allow for maximum airflow and super efficient natural cooling. Ceiling fans are also a winner and work very well when the humidity is not close to saturation point. For highly humid climates we recommend that you go to a local supplier and have them calculate what AC unit will work best and have them install an air conditioning unit into your tent. Running the A/C through the floor vents is very easy and it works extremely well. Wall mounted mini-split also work very well. Another effective option, rather than air conditioning the whole tent, is to create a microclimate over your bed with Evening-Breeze.
What are the wind ratings on the tents?
We can customize the tent in 4 different ways to handle the wind in your area. See the break down below:
Outriggers – 75 kmh to 85 kmh – 46 mph to 53 mph
Increase wall thickness of the legs – 100 kmh to 114 kmh – 63 mph to 71 mph
Wood pole and ring beam with small outrigger – 136 kmh to 155 kmh – 85 mph to 97 mph
60 mm framing with wood pole, ring beam and little outrigger – 180 kmh to 205 kmh – 113 mph to 128 mph
For a quick explination of the above see our “Lets Talk About Wind” epsiode on our YouTube Channel by Clicking Here
Can the tents have insulation?
Yes, insulation is an option. We offer a highly rated insulation that is sewn between two layers of canvas. As you may have noticed elsewhere on the website, Block-out canvas is also an option. Please note this is NOT insulated canvas. Block-out canvas prevents any silhouetting that may occur on lighter colored canvas.
Can the tents handle heavy rainfall?
Yes, the tents are 100% waterproof when installed correctly.
Can the tents handle snow?
Yes, the tents can handle snow. If you are going to be putting tents in a high snowfall area, consult with us so we can discuss how much snow you are talking about so we can decide if you need to make any customizations. These include increasing the pitched on the roof, special modification of the roof design, or using a larger diameter frame.
Can the tents handle a lot of UV (sun)?
Yes, our tents can handle sun with ease and are UV protected. We have tents doing well in the intense sun of the Namibia, Kalahari, Sahara, Sonoran, tropical islands and other locations.
Are these tents fire proof?
Our tent canvas and outer roof layers can be treated iwth fire retardancy. This will help to delay the flame, however, it is imperative to remember that all fabrics will become flammable after being exposed to a flame after a period of time. Safety and prevention are key. It is best to ensure that one has good quality fire extinguishers at all strategic points.
Can rainwater be harvested from your tent structures?
Yes, Rain harvesting will be accomplished from each of the tensioning points on the frame. To maximize rain harvesting you will attach a rain chain at each of those points and feed the rain chains through the deck. You will then run a gutter system under to deck and direct the water towards a collection point.
Are your tents considered "Temporary Structures"?
Yes. Hanging body style tents are temporary structures as they can be taken down and set back up again. The hanging body tents are an excellent choice for where hurricanes/tsunamis/cyclones occur in the world. With enough advance warning of severe weather events you will be able to take down your asset to avoid the possibilities of getting your asset destroyed. After the storm has passed you can set your tent back up. The hanging body tents are also an excellent choice for solutions when you have a land lease. When your lease is up you can take your assets with you and move to the next place.
Other questions you may have
Do you sell used tents?

How secure are our tents?
Locking the doors is a good deterrent, just as it is in a home or hotel. Be that as it may if someone wants to burglarize a tent, they surely will, as is the case with any other site built structure. Any deterrence can be used such as motion detection lighting, alarms, surveillance cameras, etc can be installed.
Do you keep stock of your tents?
We typically do not keep tents in stock. However, in rare cases we do have tents in stock. Keep an eye on our Social Media pages to see availability.
Do you have a show room
We are in the process of making show room for select tent designs. Keep an eye out for the newsletter to receive updates.
Do we offer a volume discount?
Yes
Do your tents require permitting?
Most places tents do not require permitting, however, it is your responsibility to check with your local authority to verify. Please contact us if you need any information to assist your inquiry with your local authority.
Are you able to visit a potential site for evaluation?
Yes, we offer a site evaluation service, contact us for more details.
